What Is the Meaning of Valentine’s Day?

Every February 14th, people worldwide exchange cards, flowers, and chocolates with their loved ones to celebrate Valentine’s Day. But what is the meaning of this holiday? Where did it come from? Let’s look at the history of Valentine’s Day and find out.

The first recorded association between love and February 14th comes from a poem written in 1381 by Geoffrey Chaucer. In the poem, Chaucer writes of a young man and woman who are in love but cannot be together due to the woman’s arranged marriage. To celebrate their love, they agree to meet on February 14th. While some believe this is the origin of Valentine’s Day, others believe it may have started with the Roman festival of Lupercalia.

Lupercalia was a celebration that took place every February and honor Faunus, the Roman god of agriculture. As part of the festival, young men would draw the names of women from a jar and would then be paired with them for the duration of the festival. The pairing could last anywhere from a few weeks to a whole year. While this may sound sweet, some believe that Lupercalia may have also included human sacrifice and whipping as forms of entertainment.

The first recorded Valentine’s Day celebration in North America occurred in 1779 during the American Revolutionary War. While held captive in a British prison, Lieutenant Colonel John Haywood sent a love letter to his wife. Since he was not allowed to sign his name on the letter, he signed it “From your Valentine.” This prompted other prisoners to do the same and has since become a common practice on Valentine’s day.
